Pagode

The pagode is a style of samba. It has its origins in Rio de Janeiro between the end of the 1970s and the beginning of the 1980s, from the tradition of samba circles made in the "backyards". The term "pagode" has been present in Brazilian musical language since at least the 19th century. Initially, it was associated with the parties that took place in the slave quarters and, later, it became synonymous with any party filled with joy, drinking and singing. Over time, the term "pagode" began to be used as a synonym for samba, because of samba dancers who used this name for their parties, or their pagodas.
